The recently held Central Rural Work Conference proposed to build a diversified food supply system. This is an important measure to practice the concept of big food and continuously enhance the supply guarantee capability of important agricultural products such as grain in China.

More than 1.4 billion people need to eat, which is the biggest national condition of our country. Eating "is not just about consuming food, meat, eggs, milk, fruits, vegetables, fish, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and other delicacies. Building a diversified food supply system and developing food resources in all directions and through multiple channels is conducive to better meeting the increasingly diverse food consumption needs of the people and upgrading from "eating enough" to "eating well".

Building a diversified food supply system is about expanding agricultural production space, rather than making flexible choices between food and other foods. On the basis of ensuring food production, we should enrich other foods. Our country's arable land is not abundant, accounting for 9% of the world's arable land and feeding nearly 20% of the world's population. To ensure absolute food security and basic self-sufficiency in grains, it is necessary to resolutely curb the phenomenon of "non grainization" of arable land. Looking at the entire natural ecosystem, in addition to arable land, there are over 4 billion acres of forest land, nearly 4 billion acres of grassland, and a large number of rivers, lakes, and seas and other resources. Establishing a big food concept, seeking food from forests, rivers, lakes, and seas, and facility agriculture, while expanding from traditional crops and livestock resources to richer biological resources, developing biotechnology and biotechnology industries, and seeking heat and protein from plants, animals, and microorganisms, will better ensure the effective supply of various types of food such as meat, vegetables, fruits, and aquatic products, and provide guarantees for the supply of important agricultural products on a larger scale, with better structure and higher level.

To build a diversified food supply system, we must adhere to the principle of ecological priority, develop while protecting, and protect while developing, improve the comprehensive utilization rate of resources, and promote a virtuous cycle of ecology. This requires all regions to practice the concept of big food, based on resource endowment, develop according to local conditions, and achieve the modern agricultural production structure and regional layout that is suitable for market demand and resource and environmental carrying capacity, including grain, economy, animal husbandry, fishing, and forestry.

To build a diversified food supply system, we must adhere to innovation driven approach. Expanding new space for food development must rely on strong support from technological innovation. We need to strengthen agricultural technological innovation, accelerate breakthroughs in core technologies such as breeding, seedling cultivation, and mechanical equipment development, transform and enhance traditional agriculture with intelligent equipment, accelerate the transformation and application of agricultural scientific and technological achievements, and make scientific and technological forces a powerful engine for promoting diversified food supply and agricultural modernization.

Building a diversified food supply system also requires strengthening government support. We need to coordinate the efforts of all parties, improve supporting policies, accelerate the aggregation of funds, technology, talents and other factors into the diversified food development field, and form a food development pattern guided by the government, led by the market, and participated by society.
